Don’t Touch These If You See Them on Your Plants

Gardening is a rewarding journey, but it comes with its challenges, like pest control. A recent social media post caught my attention—a leaf adorned with intricate black patterns that resembled a plant disease. Upon closer inspection, these patterns were the eggs of the Nymphalis Antiopa, or Mourning Cloak butterfly, a fascinating species with a unique life cycle.

These eggs, resembling delicate black lace, give way to spiky black caterpillars that feed primarily on willows, elms, and poplars, sparing vegetable and flower gardens. After going through growth stages and pupating, they emerge as stunning butterflies with velvety dark wings, blue spots, and yellow borders.
