A 2-year-old girl visits a shelter and selects a sick, shy pit bull in need of love.

There are a lot of dogs in shelters, and they all want the same thing: to find their forever homes. Unfortunately, some people take longer than others.

Many dogs are consistently passed over by adopters, typically in favor of younger, more traditionally appealing puppies, due to their breed, age, appearance, or health difficulties.

But every now and again, a kind human comes along and opens their heart to these dogs. One shelter pit bull’s caring person was a 2-year-old girl who chose him from among all the dogs at the refuge.

Audra Spurio never expected to be drawn to a sick and mangey pit bull when she took her 2-year-old daughter to the shelter to adopt a dog. But the toddler persevered, understanding that the dog needed some love and attention.

“My daughter was more excited to meet her than any other dog in the refuge that day,” Audra told The Dodo. Despite the fact that the dog “stunk like garbage,” the little girl insisted, “Mom, that one.”

So the child got her wish, and Gigi let the pit bull play outside. While the dog was scared and shy, the child was always loving and patient.

The dog’s conditions would have “grossed out” many children, but Gigi just saw a companion in need of her assistance.

When the pit bull was returned to her kennel, Gigi remained to beg her mother to take the dog home so they could care for her. “I’ll doggy, go home,” says the two-year-old.

Fortunately, the young girl achieved her dream. The ailing pit bull won her heart out of all the canines at the sanctuary that day, and the canine, now named Scarlett, is now in her new home.

The touching story has nearly 14 million views on YouTube, with many users expressing hope for the future because of Gigi and her care for animals.
